‘Mothers Prayers’

‘Mothers Prayers’ was launched in England in 1995. At that time, two grandmothers, Veronica and her sister in law Sandra, both from England, felt led by the Lord to pray in a special way for their children. Through prayer, they learned that Jesus wishes all mothers to surrender their children into His care, to take away pain from the mothers and to pour blessings on their children.

‘Mothers Prayers’ has now spread throughout the world and is in over 70 countries. There have been many wonderful answers to prayers.

Mothers who wish to pray together for their children and grandchildren gather together and unite in prayer with one another and place the names of their children into a basket at the foot of the cross offering them into Jesus’ care.

Sr. Doreen Bentley has been running a Mothers Prayers group in the parish of St Joseph the Worker, North Reservoir, since 2005. Between twelve and fifteen mothers & grandmothers gather weekly for about an hour and a half to offer each other prayerful support for their children and to affirm the gift of their motherhood. As they learn to trust each other, through their prayers and sharing together, their burdens become lighter.

The format of the prayer includes the invocation to the Holy Spirit, a Scripture reading, sharing of personal insights and situations, and placing in a basket the name(s) of the children the mothers wish to pray for.  There is a Mothers Prayers booklet for participants to use at every meeting.

Today I had the privilege of attending the Mothers Prayers group at St. Joseph the Worker parish. I was deeply moved by the experience and went home convinced of the value of introducing the Mothers Prayers initiative to mothers of the Penola Catholic College community where I work as College Home Liaison Person.
